Jug Handle Arch is at the mouth of Long Canyon on Potash Road near Moab, Utah. The arch and cliff face were lit by light-paintng with a 6 volt incandescent flashlight. The photo was taken at the very end of civil twilight, which gave the sky a deep blue and the Milky Way was brilliant with almost no light pollution. The light on the slope below the Milky Way is from a Potash Mining plant.
A photography trip to Moab in 1986 was a life-changing event for me. I fell in love with the spectacular scenery of southeast Utah's canyon country and the challenge of capturing on film the incredible light, land forms and remnants of ancient cultures. In 1989, I began conducting photo workshops to the area and in 1992 made Moab my permanent home. I began making the transition to digital in 2005 and the majority of my images have been made with Canon digital equipment since 2008. In addition to workshops, I started self-publishing my photographs on greeting cards in 1989 through Ancient Images, a company I founded and operated for 20 years.
