Mesa Arch in Canyonlands, Island In The Sky, is one of the most sought-after sunrise locations by professional and amateur photographers worldwide. Most mornings between March and November, it is not unusual to have 50-100 or more photographers all hoping to get this iconic image. On this day, April 15, I arrived at 2 am to shoot the Milky Way over the arch, then stayed through sunrise at 7:30 am.
A photography trip to Moab in 1986 was a life-changing event for me. I fell in love with the spectacular scenery of southeast Utah's canyon country and the challenge of capturing on film the incredible light, land forms and remnants of ancient cultures. In 1989, I began conducting photo workshops to the area and in 1992 made Moab my permanent home. I began making the transition to digital in 2005 and the majority of my images have been made with Canon digital equipment since 2008. In addition to workshops, I started self-publishing my photographs on greeting cards in 1989 through Ancient Images, a company I founded and operated for 20 years.
