Description
Comet NEOWISE (short for Near Earth Object Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer) was discovered on March 27, 2002. In early July it became visible to the naked eye on the northeast horizon at the end of morning twilight and by mid-July in the northwest sky below the Big Dipper beginning with evening astronomical twilight. By the last weekend of July it began to fade. It won't be back for 6,800 years. This photo was taken in Courthouse Towers, Arches National Park. Accompanying the comet is The Organ and the Big Dipper.
